Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State is an economically significant region, primarily relying on agriculture and trade. However, its economic resilience has been increasingly influenced by geopolitical pressures, both local and regional. These pressures include political instability, ethnic conflicts, and disputes over resource allocation that affect trade and agricultural productivity (Ogunleye & Mohammed, 2023). In recent years, economic setbacks due to these geopolitical pressures have hindered the area's ability to respond effectively to market fluctuations and external shocks, such as price volatility and environmental changes.

Geopolitical factors also influence regional economic policies, such as infrastructure development, government support for small businesses, and agricultural subsidies, all of which directly impact the economic resilience of Akwanga. This study will investigate how political dynamics, regional governance, and resource management strategies shape the economic stability and resilience of Akwanga LGA (Hassan & Abdullahi, 2024). By examining the relationship between geopolitical pressures and economic resilience, the study will contribute to the development of strategies for enhancing local economies in similar regions across Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Akwanga LGA faces significant challenges to its economic resilience, largely due to geopolitical pressures. Political instability, resource conflicts, and governance issues have led to a fragile economic environment that limits the community’s ability to recover from economic shocks. This study aims to explore how these geopolitical factors affect the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA and propose strategies for strengthening its economy.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of geopolitical pressures on economic resilience in Akwanga LGA.
  2. To examine the role of local and regional political stability in shaping economic outcomes in Akwanga LGA.
  3. To propose strategies for improving economic resilience in Akwanga LGA through better governance and resource management.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do geopolitical pressures impact the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA?
  2. What role does political stability play in the economic development of Akwanga LGA?
  3. What strategies can improve economic resilience in Akwanga LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Geopolitical pressures significantly affect the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA.
  2. Political instability reduces economic stability and resilience in Akwanga LGA.
  3. Improved governance and resource management can enhance economic resilience in Akwanga LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are significant in understanding how geopolitical pressures shape the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA. The research will provide critical insights for policymakers, local government officials, and development agencies, offering recommendations for strengthening the local economy in the face of political and resource-based challenges. This could help design better economic policies and strategies for similar communities facing similar pressures in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Akwanga LGA in Nasarawa State, specifically examining how geopolitical pressures affect the region’s economic resilience. Limitations of the study include difficulties in accessing reliable data from local authorities and stakeholders, as well as challenges related to political sensitivities around governance issues.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Geopolitical Pressures: External and internal political, economic, and territorial challenges that influence local governance and economic outcomes.
  • Economic Resilience: The capacity of a local economy to withstand, adapt to, and recover from external shocks, such as economic crises or natural disasters.
  • Political Stability: The degree of political order and the absence of conflicts, which significantly affects governance and development policies.
