Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Akwanga Local Government Area (LGA) in Nasarawa State is an economically significant region, primarily relying on agriculture and trade. However, its economic resilience has been increasingly influenced by geopolitical pressures, both local and regional. These pressures include political instability, ethnic conflicts, and disputes over resource allocation that affect trade and agricultural productivity (Ogunleye & Mohammed, 2023). In recent years, economic setbacks due to these geopolitical pressures have hindered the area's ability to respond effectively to market fluctuations and external shocks, such as price volatility and environmental changes.
Geopolitical factors also influence regional economic policies, such as infrastructure development, government support for small businesses, and agricultural subsidies, all of which directly impact the economic resilience of Akwanga. This study will investigate how political dynamics, regional governance, and resource management strategies shape the economic stability and resilience of Akwanga LGA (Hassan & Abdullahi, 2024). By examining the relationship between geopolitical pressures and economic resilience, the study will contribute to the development of strategies for enhancing local economies in similar regions across Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Akwanga LGA faces significant challenges to its economic resilience, largely due to geopolitical pressures. Political instability, resource conflicts, and governance issues have led to a fragile economic environment that limits the community’s ability to recover from economic shocks. This study aims to explore how these geopolitical factors affect the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA and propose strategies for strengthening its economy.

1.6 Significance of the Study
The findings of this study are significant in understanding how geopolitical pressures shape the economic resilience of Akwanga LGA. The research will provide critical insights for policymakers, local government officials, and development agencies, offering recommendations for strengthening the local economy in the face of political and resource-based challenges. This could help design better economic policies and strategies for similar communities facing similar pressures in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Akwanga LGA in Nasarawa State, specifically examining how geopolitical pressures affect the region’s economic resilience. Limitations of the study include difficulties in accessing reliable data from local authorities and stakeholders, as well as challenges related to political sensitivities around governance issues.
